“When a Child is Born” is a popular Christmas song. The original melody was “Soleado”, a tune from 1972 by Ciro Dammicco (alias Zacar), composer for the Italian group Daniel Santecruz Ensemble. The English language lyrics were written later by Fred Jay. Although the song is sung as a Christmas standard, it does not actually make any specific mention of Christmas in its lyrics. However, the importance attached to looking forward to the birth of one particular child somewhere, anywhere, in the world lends itself to an association with the birth of Jesus Christ, and the reference in the lyrics to “a tiny star” which “lights up way up high” could seem to be an allusion to the Star of Bethlehem.
