Death Magnetic is the ninth studio album by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on September 12, 2008 through Warner Bros. Records. It was the band’s first album to feature bassist Robert Trujillo and the first to be produced by Rick Rubin, making this Metallica’s first album since ...And Justice for All (1988) that was not produced by Bob Rock. The album received mostly positive reviews upon release, with critics describing it as a return to the musical style of their early albums. Musically, the album is a radical departure from Metallica’s previous album, St. Anger, which featured no guitar solos, a very modern sound, and low-quality production.
