Northern Sky is a song from Nick Drake’s 1970 album Bryter Layter. The song, written in DADGDG tuning, features piano, organ and celesta, performed by former Velvet Underground member, John Cale. In 2004, the NME described the song as the “greatest English love song of modern times”. The Dream Academy’s 1985 world-wide hit single Life in a Northern Town was inspired by and in tribute to “Northern Sky”. The song was included on the soundtracks to the romantic comedies, Serendipity (2000) and Fever Pitch (2005). The Spanish indie rock band Los Planetas covered the song in their ep (RCA, 1996) under the title Cielo del norte’‘. My Morning Jacket covered the song live in the fall of 2005. Read on...
